The Toyota Land Cruiser has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The GV70 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The Land Cruiser has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GV70 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The Toyota Land Cruiser offers an optional Multi-Terrain Monitor and it also offers an optional rear camera washer to make backing always safe, regardless of road dirt or grime, while the Genesis GV70 doesn’t offer a camera washer, requiring manual cleaning.

Compared to metal, the Land Cruiser’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Genesis GV70 has a metal gas tank.

Both the Land Cruiser and the GV70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Toyota Land Cruiser weighs 777 to 1170 pounds more than the Genesis GV70. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Toyota Land Cruiser is safer than the Genesis GV70:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Toyota Land Cruiser is safer than the Genesis GV70:

Warranty

There are almost 6 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Land Cruiser’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Land Cruiser’s reliability 30 points higher than the GV70.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota second in reliability, above the industry average. With 53 more problems per 100 vehicles, Genesis is ranked 16th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota third in overall reliability. Genesis is ranked 14th.

Engine

The Land Cruiser’s 2.4 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 26 more horsepower (326 vs. 300) and 154 lbs.-ft. more torque (465 vs. 311) than the GV70’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder. The Land Cruiser’s 2.4 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (465 vs. 391) than the GV70’s optional 3.5 turbo V6.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Land Cruiser gets better mileage than the GV70:

Regenerative brakes improve the Land Cruiser’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The GV70 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Land Cruiser uses regular unleaded gasoline. The GV70 with the 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder engine requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Land Cruiser higher (5 out of 10) than the Genesis GV70 (4). This means the Land Cruiser produces up to 5.2 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the GV70 every 15,000 miles.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Land Cruiser has larger standard tires than the GV70 (245/70R18 vs. 235/55R19). The Land Cruiser’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the GV70 (265/60R20 vs. 255/40R21).

The Toyota Land Cruiser’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Genesis GV70 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Land Cruiser has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the GV70; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

The Land Cruiser (except 1958) has an active front sway bar, which helps keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnects at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The GV70 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Land Cruiser has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The GV70 doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

The Land Cruiser’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (49.6% to 50.4%) than the GV70’s (52% to 48%). This gives the Land Cruiser more stable handling and braking.

For greater off-road capability the Land Cruiser has a greater minimum ground clearance than the GV70 (8 vs. 7.3 inches), allowing the Land Cruiser to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Land Cruiser’s minimum ground clearance is 1.4 inches higher than on the GV70 (8.7 vs. 7.3 inches).

Chassis

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Land Cruiser is quieter than the GV70 Sport Prestige:

Passenger Space

The Land Cruiser has .5 inches more front headroom, .2 inches more rear headroom and 2.3 inches more rear shoulder room than the GV70.

Cargo Capacity

The Land Cruiser has a much larger cargo volume than the GV70 with its rear seat up (37.5 vs. 28.9 cubic feet).

The Land Cruiser’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the liftgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The GV70’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

Towing

The Land Cruiser’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the GV70’s (6000 vs. 3500 pounds).

Standard Trailer Sway Control (TSC) on the Land Cruiser uses the Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The GV70 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

The Land Cruiser has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GV70 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Land Cruiser’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The GV70 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

If the windows are left open on the Land Cruiser the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the GV70 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Toyota Land Cruiser has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the GV70 Select/Advanced/Prestige.

The Land Cruiser has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the GV70 Prestige/3.5T.
